During a regular council meeting Feb. 25 at City Hall, Mayor Donna Hart proclaimed March as March for Meals Month in St. Cloud.

March for Meals is a program designed to create awareness of the challenges that senior citizens face when going without basic nutrition, to encourage volunteerism, and to increase donations to support the nutrition programs of the Osceola Council on Aging.

“One of the goals of senior nutrition programs is to ensure no senior goes to bed hungry,” said Hart. “Senior nutrition programs serve those who are ill, frail, elderly, nutritionally at-risk, or disabled. Senior nutrition programs are community-based; they rely on the support of the community’s resources, both human and financial, to achieve their goals. I encourage all citizens to ‘take the pledge’ and volunteer their time and talents to help our senior citizens.”

Senior nutrition programs across Florida and the United States are a part of the March for Meals campaign to increase public awareness of the work and needs of senior nutrition programs. Local events scheduled include:

·         3rd Annual Pets Marching for Meals - Friday, March 12, 9 a.m., Barney E. Veal Center, 700 Generation Point, Kissimmee, FL 34744. Participants are invited to bring their owners ($5 registration).

·         Annual March for Meals, a Rock, Roll, Run & Stroll 5K, followed by festivities at the St. Cloud Lakefront Park - Saturday, March 20, 9 a.m. ($25 registration)

·         Mayors for Meals (dignitaries delivering meals to the elderly) - Wednesday, March 24
