After three days of competing with the top FIRST robotics teams in the world, 4-H Exploding Bacon Robotics from Central Florida has been awarded the prestigious FIRST Championship Chairman’s Finalist award, becoming one of the top three teams in the world and the only finalist from North America. The Chairman’s award is given to the team that best demonstrates FIRST’s mission of changing the world into one in which science, technology, engineering, and math are celebrated alongside athletic and artistic achievements. By winning the finalist award, Exploding Bacon has been invited to attend the 2018 FIRST World Championship. In addition to their work in the Central Florida Community, Bacon’s programs provide access to STEM education for underprivileged students around the world and tell the stories of women in FIRST to inspire the next generation of female scientists and engineers. This adds to Exploding Bacon’s extensive resume of more than 50 awards in 12 years, including 5 Regional Chairman’s Awards since 2010.
ABOUT 4-H EXPLODING BACON ROBOTICS:
4-H Exploding Bacon Robotics is an Orange County 4-H club that develops students with high level technical and interpersonal skills through competitive robotics and a focus on good sportsmanship. Because we are a 4-H team, 1902 is able to draw students from all over Central Florida. Spanning 5 counties and 12 different schools plus homeschoolers gives students without a FIRST team at their school the chance to participate in the FIRST Robotics program. In addition to competitions, Exploding Bacon demonstrates their robots at various events, including the Orlando Maker Faire, the Orlando Science Center, Orange County Public Library, NASA, and more. In total, Exploding Bacon has participated in over 100 events in the Central Florida area over the past three years. Exploding Bacon’s Spark and FIRST Like A Girl outreach programs have made an impact in the community by inspiring students with fewer resources to explore STEM education, and empowering young women to be more confident in STEM.
