Two sub-500 teams will matchup in early July when the St. Lucie Mets visit Osceola County Stadium to play a four-game series against the Florida Fire Frogs. It will begin on Saturday, June 3, and conclude on Tuesday, June 6.
The inaugural season for the Fire Frogs got out to a decent start, but the Braves’ local affiliate has struggled of late, losing eight of their last 10 contests. The Mets, have been a little more steady throughout the season, going 6-4 in their last 10.
Florida hasn’t been able to bring many runners across the plate in the last couple weeks. They have scored less than two runs in all but two games since May 12, and those two games are the only wins in that time period.
This matchup will feature two of the league’s biggest power-hitting lineups. Both teams have hit over 30 homeruns this season, and the Fire Frogs have slugged 38 which only trails Clearwater for most in the Florida Class A circuit.
However, both of these squads can also bring the heat from the mound; St. Lucie and Florida rank among the top five in the league in strikeouts. With 432 K’s, the Fire Frogs trail only the Tampa Yankees for the league lead in strikeouts.
Statistically, the Fire Frogs look like they belong towards the top of the standings, however stats don’t win games which is why they are currently sitting in the bottom three of the league standings.
Both St. Lucie and Florida have a great catcher leading the way for their respective team offensively. For the Mets, Patrick Mazeika leads the team with six homeruns and 32 RBI. For the Fire Frogs, Alex Jackson leads the team with 10 homeruns, and he is batting .301 with 30 RBI.
If Florida can get their offense back on track, this will be a very competitive series. The series will start on Saturday, June 3, at 7:05 p.m. at Osceola County Stadium.
