Local Veteran Awarded the World War II French Legion of Honor Award

The French Consul General, Mr. Clement LeClerc, recently hosted an award ceremony to pay tribute to St. Cloud resident, Mr. Willis McCartney. The French President has nominated him as Knight of the Legion of Honor, the highest recognition in France for his invaluable contribution to the Liberation of France. During World War II, Mr. McCartney was a Seaman First Class and participated in the Battle of Normandy and landed on the French shores at the time of D-Day. He also fought in the South of France.

Mr. McCartney was born in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania in 1925, joined the Navy in 1943 and has resided in St. Cloud since 1968.

For his outstanding achievements, he was also given the U.S. awards including the Victory Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, 2 stars, the American Campaign, and the Asiatic Campaign Pacific 3 stars Medals.
